Is it just us or does there seem to be something awry with the current state of video game reviews. Why is it that games receiving anything but stellar ratings are quickly swept under the carpet, never to be enjoyed by the masses? What happened to the days of enjoying video games for what they are? Games! Does every title have to push the envelope of technology, storytelling, and gameplay to be considered a good game? Not in our opinion.
In most cases of the reviewing process, if whatever is being reviewed receives a 3 out of 4, it's considered pretty doggone good. But when it comes to video game reviews, a 75% is considered average at best. This doesn't seem right, does it? Why should scads of these so-called "average" games be cast out as dregs of the gaming society, while game reviewers dish out perfect scores like they're breadsticks at Olive Garden to high-profile games that have over-promised and under-delivered. Several of biggest games in the last few months have been given these ridiculously high scores. Now don't get us wrong, we are in no way disputing that they weren't great games, but quite a few major publications had no qualms with slapping 10/10's on them. Come on, fellas... really? 10/10, huh? You do know that means it's perfect, right? Oh, ok. So, you couldn't find ONE thing wrong with them? Weird... we sure could.
In this same vein, have you ever gotten the feeling when reading a game review that you just seem to be living on a totally different plane of existence than the reviewer? And no matter how valid their points may be, the two of you will just never see eye-to-eye. Much like music, video games are a highly subjective art form. If a reviewer is reviewing a first person shooter, and doesn't happen to really care for that genre, they're automatically going to have a biased opinion of it no matter how hard they try. And we're left blindly accepting their word at face value.
